Women's Health

Women’s health is as unique as each woman. As we recognize Women’s Health Month, it's important to be aware of the leading health risks affecting women today. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, while heart disease and cancer are significant health concerns for both genders, there are notable differences in how these issues manifest.

For instance, stroke ranks as the third leading cause of death among women, compared to the fifth for men. Additionally, Alzheimer’s disease is the fifth leading cause of death for women, but only ranks eighth for men.

“Women often prioritize the needs of others, sometimes at the expense of their own health,” said Alison Feese at Spring View Hospital. “However, it’s crucial for women to be aware of their unique health risks. Our team is dedicated to supporting women in achieving and maintaining optimal health.”

Here are some essential health tips related to the top concerns for women:

Heart Disease
Women face various risk factors for heart disease, such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, smoking, lack of physical activity, diabetes, and hormonal changes after menopause. While chest pain is a common symptom, women may experience shortness of breath, nausea, or pain in the back, neck, or jaw, which can often be mistaken for other conditions.

Cancer
Several risk factors increase a woman’s likelihood of developing certain cancers:

  • Behavioral: Smoking, alcohol consumption, tanning beds, poor diet, and inactivity.
  • Environmental: Secondhand smoke, pollution, and exposure to toxins.
  • Biological: Factors like gender, ethnicity, age, and skin complexion.
  • Hereditary: Inherited gene mutations can elevate cancer risk.

Women should be vigilant for warning signs, including unexplained weight loss, persistent fatigue, skin changes, and any unusual lumps or discharges.

Stroke
Women have specific risk factors for stroke, such as a family history of stroke, high cholesterol, and certain lifestyle choices. It is vital to recognize the warning signs, which include sudden numbness, confusion, dizziness, and severe headaches without an apparent cause.

If you or someone you know is experiencing these symptoms, seeking medical attention promptly is essential. During this Women’s Health Month, we encourage women to prioritize their health and schedule an appointment. For support in maintaining your health, please contact Spring View Hospital at any time.
